Saint John’s Playground

Hoxton

Risner Design completed this project while working in a consultancy role for Groundwork London. We were involved from the very initial survey and concept stages, through public consultation, fund raising, planning permission and finally as contract administrators during the build process.

The project was located on the site of dilapidated existing playground in the grounds of the grade II listed St John’s Church, Hoxton, East London. The site included half a dozen mature London Plane trees. The form, colour and texture of these trees and their bark inspired the material palette of the new playground – the natural timbers of the central play platform and basket swing, the colour and texture of the play safety surfacing and resin bound gravel, the planting choices along the boundary, the raised planters in reclaimed London Stock brick.
